Chapter Twenty-Two

Winifred sank down onto the whimsical armchair, needing a moment to contemplate the whirlwind escape to Julie’s bedchamber. She overheard voices from the living room but couldn’t translate the muffled sounds. Thank goodness she didn’t have a full bladder because she might be stuck in here for hours.

Though Julie was probably correct in her assumption that Winifred ought to remain hidden, she still felt like more of an outcast than she already was in this time period. Between her natural curiosity and introduction to 2030 American culture, she craved more knowledge about the people here. Meeting Julie’s friends would also have offered intriguing insights into Julie’s personality. On the other hand, given her short stay, she oughtn’t become too attached to her.

Yet Julie’s nurturing ways had helped temper her anxiety whenever recent events had confounded her. Winifred couldn’t have asked for a better friend to guide and protect her. Such a shame that their friendship was doomed to end. Or did “friendship” even truly capture the nature of their relationship? She rubbed her eyes. Best not to tempt a world of heartache.

Speaking of anxiety, her parents must be dreadfully worried. If not for the time machine breaking, she wouldn’t have been gone for so long. Had that guard reported her disappearance to them by now? Of course, she would time her return to the day after she’d left, which would erase their experience of her going missing. And thank heavens for that small favor because her looming confrontation with Richard would be stressful enough.

She’d also missed her weekly visit with Aunt Josephine. Josephine lived alone save for Matilda, her devoted lady’s maid, whom Winifred suspected performed much more than household services for her aunt. The affection between them was impossible to miss—or perhaps they felt comfortable expressing themselves freely in Winifred’s presence. Josephine had never married, but at least four different women had lived in her stately Mayfair home, each of them for years on end. Her aunt had provided a roadmap should Winifred decide to pursue a similar path.

Yet would she ever find someone like Julie back in 1838?

Rather than indulge in a useless daydream about an impossible future, she picked up the tablet and opened the music streaming app. There was nothing like catching up on two hundred years’ worth of music! However, something was missing. Oh yes, the ear devices. The “buds.” They were still on the bedside table because she had used them the night before. Winifred placed them in her ears.

She continued scrolling through Julie’s playlists, picking up where she’d left off. They had some common music interests, which had helped Julie curate songs for her. She studied the titles in “Fav Movie Songs.” One called Candle on the Water caught her eye. That sounds promising.

By the end, she had tears in her eyes. How romantic! She ought to save that one. Winifred couldn’t take the songs back with her to 1838, but she could listen to them as much as possible before leaving.

After sampling music for a while, she explored the Google for articles of interest.
